Hogwarts Gets Disney'd Part 1.a: The Ladies

Sometimes when you love many things you're bound to put some of them together. Like strawberry with chocolate or pancakes with chocolate chips or a hot dog wrapped in bacon (Why are all of these about food...). So it's only natural that I kept thinking in which Hogwarts house some of the Disney characters would be truly placed at.

I tried to decipher as much as I could of each of these characters as well as trying to understand what truly means to be a Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin or Hufflepuff. And when I say this, I mean both good traits and the bad ones. I know your choice takes a big part in deciding which house the Sorting Hat will put you in, but since I can't talk to the characters, I'll just put them in the house that I believe they fit best.

I'm not entirely sure into which house I would place some of these characters, but for others, I have absolutely no doubts. I'll give my best of an explanation as of why I sorted them in X house. Hell, this could even be an essay for psychology or something (probably not).

It'll work somewhat like this: I say which house the character is in, give an explanation of why and then try to rule out the other houses. It's very difficult because, of course, every character and person has something of each house; the trick is figuring out which house has the biggest percentage. Please remember this is MY opinion.

~○~

Ariel    ----    Slytherin
I put her in Slytherin 'cause she's selfish in the way that, what she wants, she'll get no matter what; that always means: strong ambition. She's ambitious to the point of running away from home for days to accomplish her dreams; one of the biggest traits of Slytherin is their ambition. Ariel certainly has other qualities, but her ambition is basically what the movie and her life is about. She has an obsession with humans and their artifacts. She strongly desires to be one so she collects anything she can find made by them almost like a compulsive hoarder.

Ariel is a good person, but sometimes she's too caught up in herself to remember others; hence she's no Hufflepuff. We can agree most of her choices aren't the smartest ones. She doesn't stop for a second to think the consequences and whatnot, and tho she is very queer (for her people, you know), it's not enough for a Ravenclaw.

Gryffindor might put up a fight with Slytherin, considering she does make some bold decisions that require some bravery, even if it's the reckless kind of brave... But then again, those bold decisions are made because of her ambition. She does what she wants and she gets what she wants; no questions asked.

Belle    ----    Gryffindor
Yes, I know... But I have a pretty good reason.

First of all, why do most people put Belle in Ravenclaw? Because she loves books and is surrounded by books and all she does is read books. Well, newsflash: loving/reading/buying/being surrounded by books is not even a quality. Reading books doesn't define her; being brave does or being loyal or kind.

Which brings me to the point; those are Belle most defining traits. You seriously believe that a Ravenclaw would rush off to a castle in the night to save her father without a plan? And then a beast appears and without thinking offers herself to free her father? And then, again, without thinking and out of an impulse fed by her love and loyalty to her father, she shows the whole village the beast so they don't think her father is mad thus putting the beast in big trouble?

Sorry, but no. All that is pure Gryffindor. You might say it's all very Hufflepuff of her; all that kindness towards the beast and magical house objects; her loyalty and love to her father (yes, loyalty is actually one of the main qualities of Hufflepuff more than Gryffindor). But, the fact that she puts herself in a position where she could die just to save her father, is extremely brave of her. The fact that she isn't freaked by the beast and everyone else in the castle, is brave, not kind. You could be the kindest person ever, but if you see a damn beast that's potentially going to harm you... You fucking run. Side note: she always confronts Gaston like nothing when she can obviously harm her in one blow too.

So yes, I believe Belle is very Gryffindor. Ruling out the other houses; Slytherin self-preservation anyone? Already explained why she's more of a Gryffindor than a Hufflepuff. And... Our dear Ravenclaw. Belle is sure eccentric for the rest of the town; I mean that's basically the first song. But I don't think Ravenclaws would rush off to do things without at least thinking about the tiniest plan like "Let me bring at least something to light my way later and probably something to defend myself just in case." I think that her bravery is a way bigger quality than being queer to the rest of the town 'cause you spend lots of time with books, spends too much time alone with your papa and you don't like Gaston.

Mulan    ----    Gryffindor
What a shocker!

Mulan is extremely cunning (one of the main characteristics of Slytherin), she "weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done." and she's also clever, resourceful, determined, and has "a certain disregard for the rules."; all which are traits Salazar valued in the students he chose. Now you see why for a moment I thought of putting her in Slytherin.

I wasn't too sure of putting her in Gryffindor because she's not reckless; she doesn't spring into action without thinking. Then I thought... Where does it says that bravery is attached to recklessness? Where does it says that Gryffindor values only reckless bravery?

Mulan may fit perfectly in Slytherin; but I believe her bravery and chivalry is greater than all of her other qualities. When she's brave she lets her cleverness, cunningness and wit shine. More than this, I remembered that all her bravery comes from wanting to save something: family, honor, a loved one, friends, herself and even all China. And through it all she remains humble.

For this reason exactly I didn't think of putting her in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff; she has a strong sense of justice and is extremely smart, but her bravery is bigger and that is what makes all her other traits surface.

Cinderella ---- Hufflepuff
For a moment I thought of Slytherin for her; she has an enormous ambition, but she doesn't really goes to extremes to achieve them. Her dreams are just that for her: dreams.

On the other hand, Cinderella basically has every trait of a Hufflepuff. She's good to the point she almost seems a saint. She treats everyone with respect, even the ones that are bad to her. Lets not forget the fact that Cinderella was a "spoiled" child meaning that her father gave her everything she wanted and needed and she remained humble, gentle and kind. She befriends anything in her path, including animals, always with a smile on her face and never giving up hope. With the famous "I'm your best friend until you mess with me" badger trait. I mean, her stepmother and stepsisters have treated her like a servant for years, but she still puts up with it. It's not until she believes they've done the ultimate offense to her that she stands up, confronts them and takes what is rightfully her.

Then, she possesses three of the main traits that identify a Hufflepuff: hard worker, loyalty and fairness. We can all agree that she works her butt off. She's still in that house out of the goodness of her heart, but more importantly because she's loyal to her family. She tries to see the good in everyone, without losing sight of their faults, never judging and trying to be fair.

So, having her almost being the very same Helga Hufflepuff, I didn't even try to discard the other houses.

Esmeralda  ----  Gryffindor
Esmeralda was easy to place since the beginning. Throughout the whole movie we see her standing up for what she believes in, for her people (even those she's never met before) and what's right. Confronting corruption and injustice with bravery and boldness.

That could also mean that she could be a Hufflepuff, but I think she's too feisty for that. She's not very ambitious nor is she very cunning or the smartest ever. She is just a protector and a defender for herself, her kind and the innocent.

Aurora   ----   Hufflepuff
She was SO difficult for me; the fact that a part of the movie consists on her sleeping and the other part concentrates on supporting characters, doesn't help. What I could gather about her was her singing skills, that she was beautiful and that she's kind (And two of these were given to her as a gift...). Her house placement is more of a "well, she doesn't show a thing from these houses and this is the one left, so let it be it." problem.

So, if you have some silver lining on this character... Please share!

Jasmine  ----   Slytherin
I have to admit Jasmine was complicated. She seemed to have a lot of qualities and none at all; what I mean by this is that she has a little bit of every house and a lot of something that's not in any house. Stubborn and independent is what I believe to be her main qualities; none of which are a characteristic of any house. Other qualities of her are: cunning, smart, brave and kind...

So I kept thinking, what does she keep doing over and over again? She is constantly breaking rules and doing whatever she wants to do within the limits she has, she keeps trying to escape her reality and she keeps taking a different direction from her duty and what her father wants from her. And why does she keeps doing this? It's not boldness and a disregard of rules which would mean Gryffindor, it's not the need to help others or loyalty, neither the constant search for knowledge. It's because she wants to be free.

Jasmine is selfish, but not in a bad way. Everything she does is because she wants. She isn't thinking about her realm or father when she refuses all those marriage proposals or when she escaped the castle; she's thinking of her happiness. She wasn't thinking of what could happen to Aladdin if they found him with her; she was thinking of doing something bold, adventurous and to her enjoyment. She wants to be free and whatever she has to do to at least feel that freedom, even if for a second, is what thrives her to make the decisions she makes.

Yes, she could fit perfectly in all the other houses (specially Gryffindor), but I chose this one for what I just explained.

Pocahontas  ----  Ravenclaw
I didn't think about this one that much, the answer was clear to me. She is too curious for her own good, she has wit beyond measure and is very wise; hence Ravenclaw.

These traits make her kind, just, rebel and brave, but she has this personality because of her curiosity and wisdom, so I discarded Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. As for Slytherin, I don't believe she has any of their traits.

~○~

Wow, that was long and this is only the first part of many. Please don't be shy on discussing these characters and telling me what you think; I'm not perfect and, like I said, some of these characters I'm not entirely sure about.

I really hope I can bring you the second part very soon; I'll try my best.

Amazing Artists | Week 4: andreasrocha

Now it's time to finally show an environment conceptual artist. This is after all what I want to become. Or mostly just painting amazing things, I just really prefer environment 'cause I fail at painting people... Anyways.

He's one of my favorite artists of this style; that group of "Artists that inspires me to keep practicing". Everything he does just makes me stare at the piece endlessly wondering how he did this and that.

It goes without saying that if you don't appreciate environmental concept art, you'll not like this artist. But, I hope he changes your mind if not one of the other artists in this special group of mine who we'll be most surely shown in the future.

Enjoy!

Amazing Artists | Week 3: lone-momo

This week I'm showing you the fantastical lone-momo; the very first artists I loved with all my heart. This is one of those artists that I start watching his gallery and immediately feel inspired.

I love everything about his art: style, colors, drawing, composition, etc. I'm just so awed every time I look at his painting & drawing technique I could stay here for hours staring at a single piece of his gallery. Which is what attracts me more about him; the drawing that doesn't really needs to be colored or finished cause it's flawless. Even a sketch is amazing.

His characters are alive, dynamic and intriguing... And those hairs!  So here's an example of the awesomeness:
